Who or what inspired you to become an inventor?

As engineers we often seem to hand problems onto the customer: don’t know the calibration constants -> give the customer a table to fill in, need to tune an autopilot -> give the customer some knobs to adjust, need power -> the customer will run cables to a battery. I’m a sailor and I want make life easier for sailors, a perfect product should come out the box and just work. Most inventions I’ve been involved with are about automating, self calibrating, self powering, eliminating setup etc., and experience shows that it’s hard for engineers to make life easy for customers. But a hard problem solved is an opportunity to file a patent and differentiate in the market. To me it seems natural that engineers seek to break new ground and try things that have never before been tried, they say that the age of exploration is over but as engineers we will be exploring forever!
