Providing real-time high resolution X-ray images to surgeons at a fraction of the dose

In operation rooms, many different surgical procedures are performed and supported by Mobile C-arm X-ray surgery systems. The detectors in these X-ray systems are the “eyes of the surgeon” that must see through patients to assist in determining a correct diagnosis and inform next steps. Due to the large versatility of surgical procedures, the detectors must comply with very stringent requirements. They must be fast, have high resolution and low noise, and have temperature stability, deliver image uniformity, without geometrical distortions. Also, their form factor is critical. The detectors must be very compact so as not to limit the visibility of the medical staff in the surgery room. At the same time, as much as they help the surgeon, the X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation, which is hazardous for patients and medical staff. Therefore, the dose used must be as low as possible.
