Teledyne Brown Reaches Milestone in Manufacture of Nuclear Waste Storage Canisters
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (February 28, 2006) — Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc. (TBE) announced today that the company reached a major manufacturing milestone with today’s shipment of the 1,000th nuclear-quality canister to the Washington Savannah River Company (WSRC) at the DOE Savannah River site in South Carolina.
Teledyne Brown, the only manufacturer of these canisters for WSRC, has been in production at its Huntsville Facility since the year 2000. The canister is made of stainless steel, weighs 1200 lbs., and is designed to store high-level nuclear waste material in a solid state for several hundred years. Each canister is built to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Nuclear Standards with an NQA-1 Quality Program.
“I would like to congratulate our manufacturing team for achieving this milestone with 100% on time deliveries while maintaining an excellent quality record,” said Jim Link, president, Teledyne Brown Engineering. “We are pleased to partner with the Department of Energy to help them achieve their goals of safe storage of nuclear waste.”
TBE recently was awarded a follow on contract from WSRC to run through the year 2010 for an additional 1056 canisters. WSRC is supporting the Department of Energy’s Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Canister Program.
